Decolonial Love: a poem of love, perseverance and resurgence | by Zakary Myers

Updated: Nov 21, 2020

My story is a story of courage, humility, perseverance, reclamation and resurgence; a story of decolonization; and ultimately, a story of decolonial love.

What is decolonial love?

Decolonial love is the love that I have and share with the land, the love that I share with the animals that have nourished my soul, and the love that I have for the ceremonies that have nourished my learning spirit.

Decolonial love is my belief in resurgence, a resurgence that is based on ancestral prophecy.

Decolonial love is my love for myself and others. Decolonial love is what helps me persevere through the oppression of my people, through the destruction of my ancestral homelands, and through the daily perpetuation of racist and inadequate policies.

Decolonial love is my love for the air that I breathe, for the water that lives within me, and for the energy that I receive when I am surrounded by youth practicing their culture.

Decolonial love allows me to see a future where my grandchildren will be able to once again drink from the natural watersheds of their ancestral lands. Decolonial love allows me to see a future where my grandchildren will eat the same foods as our ancestors. Decolonial love allows me to see a future without racism. Decolonial love allows me to see a future without extractive industries.

Decolonial love is the foundation for us to move forward. Decolonial love is the pivotal point of resurgence. Decolonial love is what will end poverty. Decolonial love will help save our planet.

Decolonial love saved my life.

Will decolonial love save yours?
